BETH: I hiked the JMT for a few reasons. First, to experience the grand beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountains for an extended period of time. I’d never spent such a long time in the wilderness and it has always been a goal to do a long trip. Second, I wanted to prove to myself that I could hike over 200 miles with 2 stainless steel rods fused to my spine. Luckily for me, I live in a time when lightweight gear is an option. I don’t know if I could have done it otherwise. My back held up fine, (hooray!), it was my feet that were the problem. Third, Rob made me. Just kidding. One reason I didn’t think of before the trip, or expect, was to make so many new friends along the way. Honestly, the people on the trail made the trip for me. They pulled me through the hard times and helped me relish the good ones.
